PURE LIGHT RACING: Pure Light Racing is the competitive racing arm of Project Pure Light. Pure Light Racing teams have participated in sprint and long distance races in Hawai’i and New Zealand, and competed in Sacramento at the IVF World Sprints competition in August 2008. They are currently training to participate in the 2009 long distance season races as well as the 2010 IVF World Sprints in New Caledonia in May 2010. The Pure Light Racing team first competed in the IVF World Sprints competition in Hilo in 2004, bringing home a gold medal in the V12 competition. In 2006, they traveled to New Zealand to participate in the same competition, where five separate adaptive paddling teams from around the world faced off against each other. Hawaii was awarded the silver medal. In 2007, the Pure Light Racing team took on the unprecedented goal of competing in their first ever long distance race, the 18-mile Queen Lili’uokalani Race in Kailua-Kona. The crew of 6 adaptive paddlers and 3 able-bodies paddlers completed the race which included difficult water changes. This remarkable achievement has set a new standard for racing for adaptive paddlers around the world. 2008 was a historic year for Pure Light Racing. In addition to completing their second Queen Lili'uokalani Race in Kailua-Kona, the team went on to participate in the 32-mile Henry Ayau Race from Hawai'i Kai to Nanakuli and was the first adaptive crew to participate in the grueling 41-mile Moloka'i Hoe from Moloka'i to O'ahu. Prior to these accomplishments, they claimed gold medals at the IVF World Sprints in Sacramento in the V-6 (500m), V-6 (1000m) and V-12 (500m) events. They also brought home gold, silver and bronze medals in the V-1 individual events. Crew members are selected and coached by Project Pure Light co-founder Aka Hemmings. Photos Link to:
